Do your genetics determine if you’ll to be fat? There are 3 body type classifications: Ectomorph, Mesomorph and Endomorph. Your body type dictates your starting point, not the ending point.
body types (soma types)
Our bodies come in an infinite variety of body types. Tall, short, fat, lean, toned or flabby. This only matters as the entry point of what you hope to accomplish. It doesn’t dictate the end result. The body types are:
- Ectomorph – lean (thin), lightly muscled, flat-chested individual
- Mesomorph – rugged, hard, athletic, classic V-shape body
- Endomorph – roundish, soft and lack of muscle tone
how it works
Body type classifications are a method of recognizing your physiological starting point. Body types are based on physical parameters, biological constraints and metabolism. While you can’t change any of these parameters, you can choose more effective methods of exercising knowing your entry point. Read about Body Composition in the Fitness Components.
is the outcome predetermined?
If you’re born an endomorph you are no more likely to be an out of shape, 300lb couch potato, than a mesomorph will be a champion MMA fighter. It has to do with recognizing your current physical state and taking small, incremental steps each day toward your goal – Goal Setting.
Body type classifications are human creation to pigeonhole you into a group. It’s a way of outsiders to look at you. Ultimately it has do do with “them” and not “you”. Screw “them” and break the mold. You can be whoever you choose to be, but it is a choice. Work each day with small steps toward your vision of “you”. You are not destined to be fat, skinny or a champion athlete. It takes work. Learn how to do it.
